The Junior Leagues of California State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC) held its annual “Day at the Capitol” in Sacramento, the first weekend in May. Over 60 Junior League members and SPAC delegates from our 16 member leagues attended the day’s activities that included panel discussions, a press conference, office visits with elected officials and a special awards luncheon.
The day began with a panel discussion on human trafficking focusing on safe harbor public policies. Our panelists included law enforcement, victim advocates, attorney general and a survivor/speaker. The candid discussion allowed our league members to learn more about the issue and also how our co-sponsored legislation SB 738 (Yee) would benefit minor victims.
SPAC delegates representing 15 leagues and over 10,000 women on the steps of the Capitol at the 2013 Spring Conference) was going to help minor victims of human trafficking.
After the panel, our league members joined the California Maternal Mental Health Collaborative press conference on maternal depression. This Collaborative was an extension of SPAC’s previous work on perinatal depression when we sponsored ACR 105 (Nava) declaring every May in California as Perinatal Depression Awareness month.
At the awards luncheon, SPAC Co-Chairs Susie Berg and Andrea Medina presented the “Legislators of the Year” to the leaders of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal and Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson.
The day concluded with SPAC delegates and league members visiting their respective elected officials offices where they shared information about SPAC, our focus issue areas, and our sponsored and supported legislation. It was a great day for the Junior Leagues of California to advocate at the Capitol for our missions, projects and community partners.
Please save the date to join us next year in Sacramento on Monday, May 5, 2014 and see firsthand what SPAC is doing on the behalf of the Junior League members!
